The History Of McClaren

The history of McLaren Racing in Formula One (F1) is full of highs and lows, great success, and heartbreaking losses. The team was formed in 1966 by Bruce McLaren and has been a mainstay in F1, winning 16 constructors and 12 driver’s championships over the years.

McLaren’s first F1 season saw them finish third in overall standings, and their first win came in the 1968 Belgian Grand Prix at Spa Francorchamps. However, at the end of the 1970s, the team had seen little success. They decided to switch to the famed Ford-Cosworth DFV engine, which brought them two Constructor’s Championships and two Driver’s Championships in 1974 and 1976 during the McLaren-Ford era.

The 1980s were a period of dominance for McLaren, as they won five consecutive Constructor’s Championships and four Driver’s Championships between 1988 and 1991, powered by Honda engines.
The team also began to use innovative aerodynamic techniques such as the ‘ground effect’ system and the ‘Fan Car,’ which revolutionized F1.

McLaren’s next period of success came after the Honda deal ended in the early 1990s, with Mercedes providing power from 1995 to 2014. During this time, they won seven constructors titles and two drivers
titles despite having to compete against Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari during his reign at the top of F1.

Since 2015, McLaren has returned to Honda and has struggled to recapture its former glory. However, they have experienced a resurgence in recent years and currently occupy fourth in the Constructor’s
Championship standings. With the team’s ambition and commitment to innovation and improvement, McLaren could be on the cusp of a return to the top of F1 and the history books.
